Northern Cyprus guide
Northern Cyprus is the third-largest Mediterranean island after Sicily and Sardinia. Turkey lies 70 km to the north, Syria 100 km east and Egypt 370 km south. The island covers 9,251 km²; Northern Cyprus 3,355 km² and the south 5,896 km².
After conflict between 1963 and 1974, Turkey’s 1974 Peace Operation led to two administrations. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is in the north; the Republic of Northern Cyprus in the south. The Green Line through Nicosia divides the capital.
Northern Cyprus is about 160 km long with five districts: Nicosia (Lefkoşa), Famagusta, Kyrenia, Morphou (Güzelyurt) and İskele. Main towns include Lefkoşa, Gazimağusa, Girne, Güzelyurt, Lefke and İskele.
Since 1974 Northern Cyprus has been divided north and south. Turkish Cypriots live in the north, Greek Cypriots in the south. The Green Line through Nicosia separates the two. Northern Cyprus covers about 36% of the island.
